Children's ministry can be the catalyst your church needs to get those families back to church. It is also the place that can rejuvenate your current families. It just takes a step back to seriously evaluate your approach to children's ministry. Many churches are still doing children's ministry like the 20th century. That just won't cut it for today's children.
Many churches have fought the fight with the internal struggle of church people who don't understand today's kids. Many have made it through to the other side and have had amazing results for the sake of the Kingdom. I believe that a strong children's ministry will result in a strong church. Many articles have been written to discuss this very topic.
The following article covers some logistics concerning furnishings and atmosphere. http://store.churchlawtodaystore.com/fuitandthwic.html
One of my favorite churches that I had the chance to be a part of is Life Church in Oklahoma City. Life church was not the first to build an extravagant children's ministry and they will probably not be the last. My kids got to be a part of that ministry and I loved every aspect of how they did things. They are the most intentional church I have ever seen in my life. They planted in the 1990's and are now over 20,000 people in 14 campuses.
Here is a small insight to who they are and how they do age appropriate ministry. http://okc.lifechurch.tv/lifekids
The man behind many of today's great children's ministry atmospheres is Bruce Barry of Wacky World Studios. The very first church he did was the First Baptist Church in Springdale Arkansas in 1999. Their children's ministry was featured in Your Church Magazine. I'll never forget the feelings I had as I read the article and saw the images of what he had done. I also remember how Bruce and his wife gave their hearts to Christ during this time of building the new children's ministry. They were baptized the same time the church was revealing the new ministry.
I would recomend spending some time on his site and looking at all of the images of his work. Some of those images are places that my family and I have been a part of. http://www.wackyworld.tv/
